Shamley Green Duck Pond Spillway Repair
Information on our approach to the recent spillway leak at the Shamley Green Duck Pond
Published: 27 March 2026
Wonersh Parish Council was recently made aware of a leak in the spillway at the Shamley Green Duck Pond. Contractors attended the site the same day and confirmed they were sourcing material to make a temporary emergency repair. This has now been effected and contractors will be revisiting the site to check the repair is holding and to add to it as necessary.
In the medium-term, the advice from our contractor is that the spillway should be completely rebuilt, which is an opinion shared by the Shamley Green Environment Group in their recent monitoring report. Waverley Borough Council, as landowner, have now approved these works to be carried out in the winter months but advised an application to Natural England is required to carry out these works in the summer months. Wonersh Parish Council are progressing this application as a matter of urgency.
The Parish Council recognise that the Duck Pond is an important community asset. It is much-loved by the village, not only because it provides a habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, but because it has become a symbol of the village as a whole and provides a peaceful place to sit and reflect. We are committed to preserving and enhancing it for both current and future generations and are currently exploring longer-term proposals to combat the effect of climate change on water levels. More information on these proposals will be presented at our Council Meetings in due course.
