Playgrounds Summer Update

Welcome to the summer update for our fabulous playgrounds!

Wonersh

In Wonersh, our contractor has been hard at work giving the table tennis tables a new lease of life. We are very grateful to him for his patience as the weather was up to its usual tricks, even in a heatwave!  It seemed like every time he got his paintbrush out it started to rain, so we might have to find him some other painting jobs around the Parish to help encourage the rain back for our plants and wildlife.  The tennis tables look fantastic and we hope you will enjoy using them over the warmer months.  The Council are exploring the idea of providing bats and balls for the tables to make them more accessible to all.

Our contractor has also taken off the very bottom of the branches on some of the bigger trees bordering the playground, where they were starting to touch the ground.   This type of pruning is important for tree health, but we also know the little ones who visit the playground love to use the space under these trees for imaginative play – so we hope they will be pleased to be able to get under there again!

We also want to say a big thank you to a local donor who made the new memorial bench possible.  It looks super smart in the center of the playground and is a massive improvement on the previous bench which was beginning to rot quite badly.  It’s the perfect spot to sit to keep an eye on the children whilst you enjoy the sunshine, so parents and guardians make sure you have a well-earned rest there over the summer holidays.

Shamley Green

We hope that you have been enjoying all the new equipment in the playground.  We’ve seen the football goals being put to good use whilst the World Cup has been on and, you never know, maybe the next Bellingham, Gordon or Kane will be from Shamley Green!

We are currently exploring options for a new large piece of equipment to replace the multiplay that was removed last year for safety reasons.  All new equipment is made possible not only by the generosity of individual donors, but also by the wonderful volunteers that run the Playground Committee.  If you would like to be involved in this, please contact clerk@wonershparish.gov.uk.

Both playgrounds …

… had their formal annual inspection recently and we await the full report.  We expect there will be one or two jobs to do as a result of this (topping up the play bark for example) but both our playgrounds are also inspected weekly by either the Clerk or our contractor.  So, if you ever see one of them roaming the playgrounds with a clipboard in hand, you know what they are up to!  It’s a very important job which ensures the safety of all the playground users and regular training is required to keep them up to date and at the top of their game.
