Declaration of Climate and Biodiversity Emergency

Wonersh Parish Council declared a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency in March 2020. This is embodied in our strategy. We have since been involved in the Greener Futures Climate and Nature Action Plan Pilot and our written plan will be available soon.

A key strategic objective for Wonersh Parish Council is to:

Respond to the Climate and Biodiversity Emergencies by considering all Council actions through the lens of carbon reduction and enhancing the environment

Our local green spaces are key to us achieving this and we manage these to increase biodiversity.  The Commons Working Party, advised by Wonersh Environmental Advisory Group and Shamley Green Environment Group and benefitting from the input of commissioned expert advice, make recommendations to Council to inform policy and practice.  Recent projects include, litter picking, wildflower, bulb, hedge and tree planting, invertebrate surveys, providing a baseline for assessing the species response to policy changes and monitoring flora and fauna.  We have woodland management plans in place for both Gerald’s Wood and Barnett Hill Fields mindful of our aims.  We introduced Mowing for Biodiversity in 2021 and review how this is implemented annually.  The most recent mowing maps can be explored on this page.

A written Climate and Nature Action Plan is underway and will be available shortly.
